Schizophrenia is a mental disorder. People with this disorder often show abnormal social behavior and fail to recognize what is real. Common symptoms include strange beliefs, unclear or confused thinking and language, hearing voices, reduced social activity, reduced expression of feelings and inactivity. Diagnosis is based on observing the person and what he or she says about experiences such as hearing voices. Problems have to last for at least six months before the person gets a diagnosis.
