Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell (November 8, 1900 – August 16, 1949) was an American novelist. She is best known for writing Gone with the Wind. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Her mother's family was Irish Roman Catholic. In Atlanta on 11 August 1949, Mitchell was hit by a car driven by a drunk driver. Five days later, she died of her injuries.
