Geraldine Ferraro (Newburgh, Orange County, N.Y., August 26, 1935 - March 26, 2011, in Boston, Mass.) was an American politician. She ran for Vice President in the 1984 US Presidential Election with Walter Mondale. She was the first woman to be a major party vice-presidential nominee. Mondale and Ferraro lost to Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, who won their second term. She was also a member of and politician from the Democratic Party. She served as a Congresswoman from New York, representing Queens in the 96th-98th Congresses (January 3, 1979-January 3, 1985). Ferraro was also an attorney, assistant District Attorney and teacher. Ferraro was a permanent member of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, from 1993 to 1996
